What is cancer?
We all know that cells are the basic and fundamental unit of life and are the basic building blocks of the body. The human body contains approximately between 15 trillion to 75 trillion different types of cells. These cells grow and divide to produce more cells to form human organs and to fulfill body needs.
Sometimes these cells keep dividing even if new cells are not needed. These extra cells form a mass of tissue which is called a growth or tumor. Tumors are divided into 2 main types
- Benign Tumor
- Malignant Tumor
Benign Tumor
Benign Tumor is not cancerous because cells in benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. They can usually be removed and most of the time, the do not come back. So benign tumor is rarely considered to be a threat to life.
Malignant Tumor
Malignant Tumor is cancerous and is made up of those cells that grow out of control & order. Cells in these tumors invade & damage nearby healthy tissues (organs) and spread to other parts of the body. This tumor can spread as a metastatic disease which means that these cancer cells can enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system from where they can spread to the other parts of the body.
So Cancer can be defined as a group of diseases that is caused by uncontrolled growth & reproduction of cells in any specific part of the body which can spread to other parts afterward.
Known Causes of cancer
There are many causes of cancer. Basically, everything that can affect the human body and its cells can cause cancer. Few of them are given below,
Inherited Genes:
Some types of cancer run in certain families. But cancer is not only linked with genes that we inherited from our parents. There are many other factors that cause cancer.
Tabaco:
Tobacco smoke is made up of more than 7,000 chemicals, including over 70 known to cause cancer. This is the reason why doctors advise against smoking.
Diet:
Different modern foods contain different harmful chemicals and other inorganic substances in them which not only causes cancer but also other diseases.
Sun and UV exposure:
Skin cancer is a type of cancer which is caused by sunlight and ultraviolet exposure.
Radiation exposure:
Radiation can cause changes in the chemical balance of cells. Some of those changes can result in cancer.
Air pollution:
The air we breathe is filled with cancer-causing substances which are causing lungs & other types of cancer.
Types of cancer
There are over 200 different types of cancer, each with its own methods of diagnosis and treatments. As I mentioned earlier that it is not a single disease, it can start in the lungs, the breast, the colon, or even in the blood. In some ways, all or most of cancers can be the same, but they are different in the ways they grow and spread.
There are many different types of cancer affecting different parts of the body few of them are,
- Bile duct cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Bone cancer
- Brain tumor
- Breast cancer
- Eye cancer
- Head and neck cancer
- Hodgkin's lymphoma
- Kidney cancer
- Leukemia

Symptoms & signs of cancer
There are hundreds of types of cancer known till date and most of them have symptoms and signs according to their area of effect and nature. If we talk about general symptoms that might be caused due to cancer are as follows,
- Bowel changes
- Urinary changes
- Blood in urine
- Rectal changes
- Persistent back pain
- Unusual coughing
- others
Treatments of cancer
Treatment of cancer depends largely on the type of cancer and the extent it has spread to other parts of the body. Since its first case hundreds of different treatments are been developed. If we categorized these treatments based on their origin and pattern of treatments, then they are classified into two main categories,
- Modern way of treatment
- Natural treatments and therapies
Modern Treatments
Modern or conventional types of cancer treatments include,
Surgery:
In which cancer tumor is removed through surgery.
Radiation Therapy:
Radiation therapy is a therapy using ionizing radiation to control or kill cancer cells.
Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy (also called chemo) is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells.
Immunotherapy:
This therapy boost bodies immunity system to fight against cancer.
Targeted Therapy:
Targeted therapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs or other substances to more precisely identify and attack cancer cells.
Stem Cell Transplant:
This therapy uses high doses of chemotherapy, sometimes with whole body radiotherapy.
Natural Treatments and Therapies
Before the proper introduction of medical sciences, the primary source of treatment was natural and of organic origin. There are literally thousands of known treatments of cancer in different geographical regional medicines including Chinese medicines, European traditional treatments, Indian & native’s medicine etc. But most of them are not accepted in modern word due to their obsolete way of treatments or due to their controversial success rates. Few of the known natural treatments that are non-controversial and have high success rates are,
